| The Georgia China Alliance in Atlanta plans to host
more seminars promoting education and investment in China like its
June 13 symposium featuring representatives of western Chinese universities,
said Rongrong Liu the alliance's executive director told GlobalAtlanta.
The alliance, which is a public-private initiative led by state
Sen. Sam Zamarripa, D-Atlanta, promotes trade and cultural relationships
between Georgia and China through seminars and educational activities.
The group, which is seeking members both individual and corporate,
is planning a networking event for Thursday, June 30, for 45 government
officials and corporate executives visiting from Hangzhou, China.
On June 13 the alliance welcomed 10 representatives from the provinces
of Shaanxi, Guizhou, Gansu, Qinghai and the autonomous regions of
Inner Mongolia, Ningxia Hui and Xinjiang Uighur. The delegation,
which also included two representatives from the eastern province
of Beijing, came to Atlanta to learn about how institutions of higher
education can work with local communities to promote economic development.
"This visit was pretty exciting. Most delegations coming from
China are from [China's] east coast because it is more developed,"
Ms. Liu told GlobalAtlanta.
Ms. Liu noted that the development of western China is becoming
an increasingly important issue for the Chinese government, as the
area is rich in coal, mineral and gas resources but has not yet
been developed industrially.
The delegation met with representatives from the Georgia Institute
of Technology, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University
and the University of Georgia during the symposium at the offices
of Arnall Golden and Gregory LLP to discuss small business development,
economic development assistance and incubator programs.
The delegation, which also visited Brownsville, Texas, and Athens,
before arriving in Atlanta, continued to Missoula, Mont. and San
Francisco.
The trip was organized by the National Committee of United States-China
Relations, a non-profit group based in New York that promotes education
and cross-cultural awareness between the U.S. and China, and was
sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Georgia-China Alliance has just re-launched its Web site that
features China-related news and media-blogs about future and past
events. It can be found at www.georgiachina.com.
